Basalt Fiber Products

   Beijing JUNANTAI Basalt Fiber Application Institute (BJBFAI) is formed to promote basalt fiber applications.    Basalt is a common gray to black volcanic rock. It is usually fine-grained due to rapid crystallization as lava on the Earth's surface. It may be porphyritic containing larger crystals in a fine matrix. Basalt in the tops of subaerial lava flows and cinder cones will often be highly vesiculated, imparting a lightweight "frothy" texture to the rock. The term basalt is at times applied to shallow intrusive rocks with a composition typical of basalt, but rocks of this composition with a phaneritic (coarse) groundmass should generally be referred to as diabase or gabbro. The crustal portions of oceanic tectonic plates are predominantly made of basalt. Unweathered basalt is frequently black to greenish-black in color, characterized by a preponderance of calcic plagioclase feldspars and pyroxene together with minor amounts of accessory minerals such as olivine.


   Basalt continuous fibers are produced from basalt rock using single component raw material by drawing and winding fibers from the melt. Once the continuous basalt fibers have been produced, they are converted into a suitable form for particular application. Basalt fibers show higher tensile strength and modulus, better chemical resistance, extended operating temperature range, better environmental friendliness than regular E glass - all in one material - getting close to and sometime outperforming carbon fibre and high strength glass and other specialty fibers but beating them price wise. Basalt continuous fibers are ideally suited for demanding applications requiring high temperatures, chemical resistance, durability, mechanical strength and low water absorption. Basalt fibre's technical features as below:

Basalt twisted yarn is produced by twisting the basalt roving. Twist provides additional integrity to the yarn before it is subjected to weaving.

[Basalt Fiber Roving]
Basalt roving is produced by assembling a bundle of strands into a single large strand, which is then wound into a stable, cylindrical package. These basalt fiber strands of yarns are covered with a special sizing agent to provide sufficient integrity required for further processing.

[Basalt Fiber Chopped Strands]
Basalt Cut Fiber is a continuous basalt fiber filament which has been chopped to a specific fiber length in a dry cutting process. The fibers are coated with a sizing treatment which makes them highly compatible with epoxy and phenolic resins.

Basalt Fiber Woven Basalt fabrics are produced for structural, electro technical, general and specialized purposes.
For structural uses, basalt fabrics are useful for producing structural basalt - plastics based on various thermosetting binders: epoxy and phenolic polyesters (for instance by a laying - out method). From this materials components for automobiles, aircraft, ships and household appliances can be produced. In the case of preliminary metallization of the fabrics, the resulting basalt - plastic acquires shield properties against electromagnetic radiation.
Also, basalt fabrics can be used as a basis when producing soft and rigid roofing.
Basalt fabrics for electrotechnical purposes are used as a base for the production of insulation materials. Their properties are shown table. These materials are employed in the production of substrates for printed circuit boards for electronics and electrical engineering. These have superior properties to similar conventional components made of fiberglass.
General purpose fabrics are useful, for instance, in fire feltings for suppression of extremely complex fires resulting from ignition of highly inflammable liquids, in particular gasoline. The employment of incombustible basalt fabric inserts in industrial ventilators increases their fire safety as well as the fire resistance of ventilating systems.
The noncombustible properties of basalt woven materials enable it to resist flames for long periods which make basalt tapes effective as an extra fine - resistance insulation for electric cables and underground ducts.
Basalt fabric hoses may be useful for reinforcing cables, repairing the interior and exterior of tubes and pipelines.

First of all, particularly in the residential buildings for heat and sound insulation of walls, floors and ceilings. The stiffened sheets are used for manufacturing multilayer building panels of the "sandwich" type consisting of concrete and basalt or metal-basalt-metal layers. Basalt fittings are used to bond the layers and basalt fittings are employed to insulate the panel butt joints.
The board-based roof lining is moisture-proof and durable.

[Thermo Insulating Basaltic Board Sheets]
The stiffened board sheets are produced from discrete basalt fibers, so - called basalt wool with binder. Materials are ecologically safe and used as asbestos replacements.
Depending on the board's density, the may be soft and tough. The binder in soft board sheet is PVA, the only safe organic binder. In tough board sheet bento-colloid (clay) is used.

Basaltic cord consist of basalt fibered wool core and fiber glass roving braiding. Low thermal conductivity and high vibration resistance of basalt cords make them excellent heat insulators.
